Davis Sadaris is an American humorist and essayist know for his autobiographical stories and social commentary. His essays have been published in book form and he also writes for the New Yorker magazine.
I had heard of him and even listened to him on National Public Radio over the years but I wasn’t that familiar with him.
Last week Julien’s mother-in-law, Dympna, emailed me to chat and she asked if I was familiar with him. That prompted me to check him out on Amazon and I immediately ordered his book, Me Talk Pretty One day. When I’m working on my own novel, I’ve never liked reading fiction during that time. But I can’t not read! So I tend toward non-fiction.

I finished it on Saturday and I laughed my way through it! (And in today’s world, who doesn’t need a bit of joy?) It was like sitting with a good friend over a glass of wine and hearing his comical stories about his family, his extremely astute observations on social situations and humanity in general. I devoured all of it. He has a gift for taking the most mundane incidents and getting to the meat of it, all with humor.
He lives in England now but had previously lived in Paris. I especially resonated with his chapters on that. Having also lived in Paris on and off while Ray was working there, I could definitely relate to his take on Americans visiting the City of Light! (And I thought I was the only American who felt that way) They tend to be loud, boastful, complaining and they constantly make comparisons about things being so much better in America. (Which always made me wonder why they bothered to spend the money to visit there. But that’s another blog)
I loved the playful take on his family. He has five siblings (But Tiffany tragically passed away in 2013, just a couple weeks short of her 50th birthday) and he tells about them during childhood and as adults. As an only child, I loved the closeness and camaraderie that came through his words. His sister is Amy Sadaris, the actress, comedian and writer.
If you’re looking for a fun, funny, lighthearted book, I highly recommend reading David Sedaris! I enjoyed this book so much, on Sunday I ordered Happy-Go-Lucky. I’m only a few chapters into it, but I’m loving it just as much.

And by the way, Dympna also told me that she has tickets to go see Sedaris live on September 17 with her daughter in London, Sorcha. They’re flying to Amsterdam to see him! Dympna lives in Ireland. I’ve always envied people living in Europe or the UK for that reason. They can easily fly to other countries the way we visit states. Such a great opportunity!
So thank you so much, Dympna, for stirring my curiosity about David Sadaris! And have a wonderful time seeing him in person!
See you here the next time…………………
