Goodbye, July . . .

Here we are on the last day of July! Another month just flew right by.

I haven’t done anything particularly exciting but I’ve been busy. Politically, it’s been a month of turmoil. As a staunch Biden supporter, I was very sad to see him step aside. However, I was also extremely impressed by his selfless act. I wasn’t surprised because he’s always been one person who I’ve felt had zero ego. And he proved it again by putting our country above his ambitions. Therefore, my sadness has been replaced by hope. Hope that we will be able to hold on to our valued democracy.

In 2016 I also feared for our democracy. So I joined a local Indivisible group and tried to do my part by joining the local Women’s March when a larger group marched in Washington that day. I continued on with the group doing protests, attending rally’s, writing postcards to Congress, making phone calls, etc. Unfortunately, my candidate lost but I continued on with the group for a few more years.

And now our democracy hangs in the balance once again. So it’s time for me to do my part. I had heard about Postcards to Swing States and immediately signed up to volunteer. My instructions, postcards and voter list arrived in the mail last week. I’ll be writing out 200 postcards to voters in Florida. They will go into the mail on October 24.

I’ve already begun writing them out. It’s not a major job. Just time consuming. However, I hope that my small attempt will bring the desired result in November.

I’ve also been quite busy working on my novel. I’m in the wonderful, exciting place that authors love to be. On a roll. My story is coming together and I’m at the point where I live, breathe and am consumed by my characters. My notebook is always with me because I could be shopping in Publix when a new idea hits me. My story is the last thing I think of before I fall asleep and the first thing I think of when I wake. It’s fun and exciting.

I’ve completed 120 pages and about 24,000 words. So needless to say, I’m happy because I’m on track for my self-imposed schedule.

And what have you been up to this summer? Have you travelled? Stayed close to home? Done something out of the ordinary? Or just enjoying the lazy, hazy days of summer?

I’d love to hear what you’ve been doing. A one-sided conversation is never fun. So leave me a comment below and share your news.

See you here next time……………………..

I like the idea of your writing campaign but here in Rhode Island I vote male ballot due to my disability and I have voted by the beginning of October you may need to send those items out sooner than what you think The summer is mostly devoted to the gardening eye Doctor appointments. Getting a lot of knitting done and discovering new stitch patterns that are fun to try out. Going through all my little pieces of yarn and making them into a scrappy Afghan has really consumed my time I think I’ve made about 3 of them already and it’s just starting to put a tiny debt into the little teeny pieces left over from other projects.

    1. I also vote by mail, so I agree with you. But I think all of us got a particular date to get them mailed. They spaced it out, I think, so the PO won’t get overloaded. My date is October 24. They said the dates were found to be the best in the past.

Good for you enjoying the summer with knitting and going through your yarn for afghans. And thank you for the reminder. I knit every day and I have a few finished projects I’ve been meaning to share on here in a blog. Enjoy your summer!

  2. Good political work.

  3. Good, luck. I hope your messages have a resounding effect on voters.

    1. Thank you. You and me both!

  4. Terri, I am so excited to see that you are doing postcards for 2024! I have been involved in local politics and community action in Virginia since 2008. (I’m sure you can figure out why.) I’ve done voter registration; presentations to local civic groups; knocked on hundreds of doors; made as many phone calls; set up and staffed the table at our polling place; put out signs; picked them up when the campaign was over; and even led stand-up orientations for busloads of volunteers arriving from other states to help out here on Election Day. Whew! But in the last couple of years, with a foot injury that has really slowed me down, I have begun doing postcards. A friend down the street and I take treats to the campaign headquarters for more mobile (and younger, frankly) troops and then stay behind and write cards. It has been a great way to get to know each other better and we know they make a difference. Are any of your cards going to Cedar Key? Wouldn’t that be a blip?

    1. You certainly have also done your share to insure voting rights and our democracy. How nice that you’re now also doing postcards and I’m sure the workers appreciate those treats!

So far, I have 50 postcards done and none to Cedar Key. But when I lived there, it was definitely predominantly Republican. Just a few Democrats, who were my friends. Most of the cards written so far are Tampa area and south of me in Miami and that area.
Here’s hoping everyone votes! I just can’t even imagine not voting. I remember my dad saying when I was a kid, if you don’t vote, you can’t complain.
